Sports Day 2016
Congratulations, speedsters!
Congratulations to everyone — you — for taking part in the top ten-finger typist competition.
A 4th class child came 3rd — Lennon Berigan, with 24 words per minute (with a page covering his fingers so he could not look down, like everyone in the type-off).
A 5th class child came 2nd — Kadie Johnson, with 33 words per minute.
And a 6th class child came 1st — congrats to Adam Kenny, with a whopping 54 words per minute. A magnificent effort.
I asked him how he does it? His answer: “Practice.”
Go and do the lessons on typing.com (log in for free). Enjoy!
Summer Tour for Student Councillors & Green School Reps
Here are some photos of today. Click on them twice for a closer look.
How lucky we are to be able to go visit the Phoenix Park, only a few minutes away.
Thank you to all these people…
- Mr Molloy for organising the trip,
- Sr Catherine for driving some of us,
- Ray the driver (he got us there, and back, safe and sound)
- the tour guides, including Bernie from Clondalkin, who taught us about life back in the old days in castles like Ashtown Castle,
- your parents for giving you permission,
- Mr Ruddy for paying for the bus and the ice-creams 🙂
- and of course…
- you! Not only have you worked so well all year for your class. Today you showed again how wonderful you are—playing so peacefully with each other, listening so well to the guides, cleaning up so so well “for the boys in green” :), and just being your wonderful selves.
Hope you like the photos.

Summer Stars Reading Programme
The Summer Stars reading programme is running in public libraries throughout the country this summer. Summer Stars is a free programme, open to all children.
Each child who registers for the programme at their local library joins in the fun of reading lots of exciting books during the summer. Children will receive their own Summer Stars Reading Card to record their progress and the Summer Stars Reward Stamp will be added to their card at the library for each book read. Fun rewards will be provided along the way. At the end of the programme, all children who have participated will be invited to attend an awards event.
- Encourage children to choose stories they are likely to really enjoy.
- Try to keep stories appropriate to their reading level. If too hard or too easy, they may lose interest or confidence.
- Comic books or graphic novels can be a good way of helping children to follow the story if they have difficulty reading or are reluctant readers.
- When they find a word they don’t understand, try to avoid telling them the meaning straightaway. Ask them instead to guess what the unknown word is likely to be based on the pictures near to it or by looking at the full sentence around it.
- Give lots of encouragement and praise for even the smallest accomplishment.
- Focus on the enjoyment and fun of reading. If you show an interest in reading and learning yourself, your child will be more likely to follow your lead and explore as well.
You can visit the webpage http://www.librariesireland.ie/summer-stars/ or Clondalkin Library, or your local library, for further details.
Happy Reading!
Summer garden
It is the middle of Summer and all the hard work planting seeds in Spring in the garden has paid off. It is almost time for harvest.
Lots of our vegetables and herbs are now almost ready to be eaten! There is lettuce, potatoes, onions, beetroot, spinach, peas and lots of other plants, herbs and vegetables growing away.
Thanks to Ms Considine, her helpers and all the teachers and children visiting and keeping an eye on it.
This Year’s Ten-Finger Typing Competition… It Could Be YOU!
Imagine how great it will be when you learn to type really really fast. How it will help you do things quicker and easier.
Imagine being able to type fast WITHOUT looking down at your fingers on the keyboard!!
You can do it, if you want to.
Why not start now! Here’s a short video telling you the basics. And here’s the best website to use to learn to type. It’s easy to remember… typing.com. And the website challenges you, a little harder each time (make sure you sign up [for free] so that it remembers how many challenges you’ve already passed).
On Monday the 20th June, the speediest ten-finger typist from each class will have a “type-off” in the computer room. Everyone’s fingers will be covered by me with a light sheet of paper. And you’ll be typing the ONE-MINUTE test from typing.com.
It doesn’t matter who wins. What matters is that you have fun doing it right and getting better and better. So start the fun now!
Good luck!
C’mon Ireland in the European Football Championship 2016
We would like to wish the Republic of Ireland soccer team the best of luck in the European Championship. Special good wishes go to Stephen Quinn, our past pupil, who has been selected as part of the 2016 squad. We are very proud of him. Stephen took some time out last week from a hectic training schedule to visit us. Stephen is a brother of Jenny who is a member of our staff. Good luck to Stephen Ward also, who is a brother of Ms Ward and a nephew of Ms Madden.
