Climate Heroes

Yesterday, Ms Ward’s 5th Class took park in a Workshop focused on Climate Change run by SFI Curious Minds

  • They learned about the difference between weather and climate. How weather is the day-to-day changes but climate is the long term patterns over time. PowerPoint and discussion on how the climate crisis is driven by humans.
  • Greenhouse gases – Where do green house gases come from? What three issues are you going to focus on as the President of Ireland – Energy Industries, Residential, Public services, Transport, Agriculture, Commercial services etc.  Need to tackle the highest percentage of issues. Eg. Petrol, cutting down trees, burning of oil.
  • Melting Ice – Comparing 2 pictures with different sea levels. How they have risen from 1880.
  • Animals that are affected.
  • What can STEM do? Scientist can use a range of resources to calculate the dept of the rivers, resources to soak up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere etc.
  • Young people involved in climate change – Greta Thunberg.
  • Flossie Donnelly – Organises beach cleans.
  • Lesein Mutunkei – Combining his love of football, everytime he scored a goal, he would plant 11 teams, one for each member of his team.

Activities:

  • True or false game. Children had to work in groups to decide whether or not each statement on the climate is true or false.
  • Explore the affects of climate change – Poster. Match the card with the pictures on the poster. (Ie. Seas get hotter, more rivers flooding, coral reefs bleach or die, higher air temperature, glaciers shrink, ice sheets melt, less snow on mountains which melts earlier.. )
  • What can we do to help tackle the climate crisis – Discussion in groups.
  • Reduce, reuse and recycle – Take more public transport, turning off lights, eat more fruits and vegetables, Renewable energy, not wasting water.
  • Map of your school, Draw a map of where you would plant trees. Maths to see how much carbon dioxide could be absorbed depending on how many trees are planted.
  • Each child got to plant cress seeds in a paper cup.

Good News… Times and Dates For Confirmation Events 2023

Parents/Guardians of 6th class children being confirmed this year,

Here, per the letter sent home today, are the times each class is being confirmed on Thursday 27th April:

  1. 11.00 am: Mr Coleman’s class and Ms Treacy’s class
  2. 1.00 pm: Ms McEvoy’s and Mr Gordon’s class

By having only two classes at a time we can allow each child be supported by up to 6 or 7 others (parents/guardians, sponsor, and perhaps others such as grandparents etc).

Also, many things are happening in advance (including a day-long retreat for the children by the wonderful Net Ministries on Wednesday, 29th March). The following two things concern YOU…

  • Tuesday, 21st of March, 7pm, in Bawnogue Church
A Talk for Parents / Guardians

We are extremely lucky to have Ronan Barry come to give the talk. More on this closer to the time.
  • Tuesday 28th of March, 7pm, in Bawnogue Church
    The Ceremony of Light

This is a key part of your child’s preparation.
It’s a lovely experience for you and your child.
A key part of the service is when parents/ guardians hand the lighted Baptismal candle to their child, acknowledging that their child is now ready to become a responsible Christian.
Parents/Guardians light their child’s Baptismal candle from the Paschal candle and hand it to their child. In doing so, parents/guardians promise to help and support their child live out the call of their Confirmation. They are agreeing, together with their child, to keep the light of faith burning in all of their lives.

You would be proud of the way your child is preparing their mind and their heart for receiving the sacrament of Confirmation — the strengthening of the Holy Spirit in their lives. Each student is using a special ‘Grow In Love’ workbook bought by the school in October; it helps them learn more about Jesus and the Holy Spirit, and prompts them towards their Christian mission in life — to love God and take action to love (all) others.

God bless,

Martin Stuart
Confirmation Coordinator

Potato Wedges!

Back in September, Mr Byrne’s 3rd class wanted to know:

How can we feed ourselves, without having to go to a shop/supermarket to buy food?

So off they went to the school garden to harvest potatoes that had been grown and make them into tasty potato wedges!
